JFK's triumphant visits to Dutchess County made his death all the more heartbreaking for residents

He was tall, he was young, his presence was magnetic. Less than three months after emerging from a white, two-engine plane at Dutchess County Airport on Aug. 14, 1960, to cheers and shouts of "Atta boy, Jack," Sen. John F. Kennedy, Democrat of Massachusetts, would be elected president of the United States.
